California Divorce Records

California Divorces are regulated by the state in which they occur.

California Divorce records are maintained by these states as well. Although some states may have a central storage place for official records such as a state repository, the California County Divorce Records courthouses are the main storage facility for California divorce records.

Therefore, any search for divorce records should begin at the local County Divorce Records courthouse where the divorce was filed and finalized.

Official copies may be obtained from the state repository, but certified copies can only be obtained from the local County Divorce Records courthouse. Each County Divorce Records courthouse will charge a small fee per their guidelines.

Basic information about the divorced couple will be included in all divorce records. The full names of both individuals, including the wifes maiden name, the address at the time of the divorce, and the date of the divorce will be in the record. Additionally, the initial filing date, the name of the County Divorce Records, and an identification number for the certificate will also be included on the document.

Some states also include the number of children the couple had under the age of eighteen at the time of the divorce. Much of the above information is requested at the time you file your request, but the most important pieces are the husbands name and the County Divorce Records. The reasons behind this are because the records are filed under the husbands name and they are kept at the County Divorce Records courthouse where the divorce was filed.

If you do not have the name of the County Divorce Records, then your search will take a bit longer, and it will require a bit of sleuthing. You can begin your search at the state level to acquire the information that you need, as long as you have the name of the husband. You can also conduct a search for past and current spouses. This will result in a compilation of all of the names and addresses of the spouses. The County Divorce Records can be discovered with this information.

The most difficult type of search involves looking at one County Divorce Records at a time for the divorce records. This can be an extensive search especially if the state is also unknown.

In general, the request that provides the most pertinent information will be the quickest. However, other factors may come into play such as the size of the courthouse and the availability of its staff, the date of the divorce, and the time of the year that the request is made. A search will usually take between two to ten days.

Follow these guidelines to produce a more efficient and timely search.

1. Print or type each name and address clearly to avoid confusion. This includes the full name of both the husband and the wife. The maiden name should be included for the wife.
2. Keep your request brief and to the point.
3. Limit your request to one document.
4. Include the full names of the individuals, including nicknames and alternate spellings that may have been used.
5. Include the full address of the individual at the time of the divorce, including street, city or town, and state. If you know the County Divorce Records in which the divorce took place, include that as well.
6. Include the date that the divorce was finalized. If you do not have this piece of information available, include a time frame for the search. Generally, it is best to specify a short span of years for an unknown year search. You can always expand the number of years that you search, and a shorter span will lead to a shorter search. You can expect to pay an additional fee for searches such as this that require more effort.
7. Include contact information where you can be reached in the event that more information is required. Include a daytime telephone number, as well as, an evening telephone number. You may also include a fax number or an e-mail address.
8. You should include your relationship to the individuals listed in your search request.
9. You should include the purpose of your request.
10. Print your name clearly and sign your request. Some states may also require additional identifying information on you as well, including a drivers license number.
11. Include a SASE, or self addressed stamped envelope with your request for a speedier delivery.
12. Include the date that you mail your request with your correspondence.
