Divorce Records in Kentucky

The state government regulates the mandating of divorces, and therefore, it also maintains all divorce records.  Typically, a state repository holds all records after a particular year that varies across the different states.  In Kentucky, the records from June 1958 and later are maintained at the state level.  All other records are held at the local county courthouses within that state.

Although divorce records after 1958 can be obtained from the state, the only way to acquire a certified copy is to request one from the county office.  A written request must be presented to the Clerk of County Court in Kentucky.  The request needs to be presented at the county courthouse where the divorce was filed and finalized.  Divorce records are filed under the husband�s name and therefore, the it should be included.

Each divorce record contains basic information on the divorced couple although minor variations occur across different states.  The records will include the following: the full names of both individuals, including the wife�s maiden name, the address at the time of the divorce, the date of the divorce, the initial filing date, the name of the county, and an identification number for the certificate.  Some states also include the number of children under the age of eighteen at the time of the divorce.

If you are unsure of the county where the divorce took place, you can begin your search at the state level.  Additionally, you can also conduct a search of past and current spouses.  This will generate a list of the addresses along with the names.  From the address, you can obtain the name of the county.

The typical time frame for a search for divorce records to occur is from two to ten days.  Genealogical searches may take longer depending on the amount of information that was available in the first place.  Each office typically charges a small fee for the search as well as the copy of the divorce record.  In Kentucky, you can contact the following phone number to obtain the look up fees for the different counties and types of records: 502- 564-4212

Follow these guidelines to produce a more efficient and timely search.

1. Print or type each name and address clearly to avoid confusion.  This includes the full name of both the husband and the wife.  The maiden name should be included for the wife.
2. Keep your request brief and to the point. 
3. Limit your request to one document.
4. Include the full names of the individuals, including nicknames and alternate spellings that may have been used.
5. Include the full address of the individual at the time of the divorce, including street, city or town, and state.  If you know the county in which the divorce took place, include that as well.
6. Include the date that the divorce was finalized.  If you do not have this piece of information available, include a time frame for the search.  Generally, it is best to specify a short span of years for an unknown year search.  You can always expand the number of years that you search, and a shorter span will lead to a shorter search.  You can expect to pay an additional fee for searches such as this that require more effort.
7. Include contact information where you can be reached in the event that more information is required.  Include a daytime telephone number, as well as, an evening telephone number.  You may also include a fax number or an e-mail address.
8. You should include your relationship to the individual�s listed in your search request.
9. You should include the purpose of your request.
10. Print your name clearly and sign your request.  Some states may also require additional identifying information on you as well, including a driver�s license number.
11. Include a SASE, or self addressed stamped envelope with your request for a speedier delivery.
12. Include the date that you mail your request with your correspondence.
