How to Find Georgia Marriage Records

Marriage Records in Georgia

Marriage records contain basic information about the married couple. This information includes the names of the two individuals, the date of the marriage, and the place of marriage. Some marriage records will also include the names of the mothers and fathers of the couple. Additionally, some records contain the names of the official witnesses to the marriage. Some governmental marriage records contain the maiden names of the mothers of the bride and groom as well as the place of residence of the married couple.

A marriage record should not be confused with any of the following: a marriage license, a marriage announcement, or a marriage index. The marriage license is the legal document that was issued to the couple that was married. The marriage announcement is the public listing of the wedding, in most cases, in a published newspaper.

A marriage index is simply a list of the marriages within a specific location. Typically, such an index includes the names of the bride and groom, the date of the marriage, the name of the county in which the marriage occurred, and either the file number of the license or the volume and page name for a register listing as well as the location of the marriage record.

In Georgia, marriage records prior to 1952 must be obtained from the county courthouse office. It is necessary to contact the Probate Clerk at the local county courthouse where the records are kept. Marriage records after 1952 can be obtained in person or by mail. Georgia law requires prepayment of the fee as well as a written and signed request.

The fee for one certified copy is $10.00. Additional copies of the same record that are requested at the same time are an additional $5.00. If a search must be conducted due to the lack of an actual date, an additional charge of $10.00 is included. Fees are nonrefundable. Fees must be paid by money order or a certified check made out to Vital Records.

A request for marriage records must include the following:
1. The groom�s full name
2. The bride�s full name
3. Date of the marriage, including month, day, and year
4. The place or location, city and county, in which the marriage took place
5. The number of requested copies

To obtain a certified copy of a marriage record in person, visit the state or local office during regular business hours, typically between the hours of 8:00 A.M. and 4:45 P.M. during Mondays through Fridays.
