How to Find Divorce Records in New Mexico

Locating divorce records is simple enough. Since divorces are regulated by the state in which they are filed, the divorce records will be available in that state. To acquire a certified copy of a New Mexico divorce record, send a written request to the local county courthouse where the divorce was filed. Typically, the Prothonotary Office maintains the records. However, some courthouses do not have one of these, so they store the records in a different office at the courthouse.

Most of the states also maintain a central database or state repository where the records will also be available. This is a useful place to look when you do not know in which county the divorce was filed. Since the records will contain the address of the divorced couple as well as their names, you will be able to discover the name of the county. Then, you may continue your search at the county level.

If you are unsure of how many spouses the individual has had, you can conduct a search for past and present spouses. No only will this produce the names of all spouses involved, but also, it will provide the addresses where they resided at the time of the marriage. This type of search can also be used to locate the name of the county.

A request for divorce records usually takes between two to ten days, depending on several things. Whether you have provided accurate and sufficient information plays a large part in the amount of time needed to process your request. For this reason, genealogical searches often take quite a bit longer.

Other factors that might influence the length of time needed to process a requests include: the reason behind your request (some are more urgent than others), the size of the courthouse, the number of available staff, and the amount of other requests placed before yours.

Each courthouse charges a small fee to process your request and produce a certified copy of the divorce record. This fee usually varies across states and typically by county as well. However, the fee is small and usually ranges somewhere around five to fifteen dollars.

Although the information on a divorce record may vary somewhat from state to state, basic information about the divorce couple is usually included. Typically, the following are listed on the records: the husbands full name, the wifes full name including her maiden name, their address, the name of the county, the recorded filing date of the divorce, the actual date of the finalized divorce, and an identification or certificate number. Some states also include the number of children under the age of eighteen at the time of the couples divorce.

Follow the guidelines here to produce a more efficient search.

1. Print or type each name and address clearly to avoid confusion. This includes the full name of both the husband and the wife. The maiden name should be included for the wife.
2. Keep your request brief and to the point.
3. Limit your request to one document.
4. Include the full names of the individuals, including nicknames and alternate spellings that may have been used.
5. Include the full address of the individual at the time of the divorce, including street, city or town, and state. If you know the county in which the divorce took place, include that as well.
6. Include the date that the divorce was finalized. If you do not have this piece of information available, include a time frame for the search. Generally, it is best to specify a short span of years for an unknown year search. You can always expand the number of years that you search, and a shorter span will lead to a shorter search. You can expect to pay an additional fee for searches such as this that require more effort.
7. Include contact information where you can be reached in the event that more information is required. Include a daytime telephone number, as well as, an evening telephone number. You may also include a fax number or an e-mail address.
8. You should include your relationship to the individuals listed in your search request.
9. You should include the purpose of your request.
10. Print your name clearly and sign your request. Some states may also require additional identifying information on you as well, including a drivers license number.
11. Include a SASE, or self addressed stamped envelope with your request for a speedier delivery.
12. Include the date that you mail your request with your correspondence.
